The maritime industry has progressed immensely over the last few years. New regulations and technological advances, decarbonisation and in general the needs of the industry have all inevitably contributed to the broadening of the roles required. I believe these new factors have contributed to the appeal of the industry to women and it is important to maintain the trend by raising even further the awareness of what the maritime industry can offer to young women.
Shipping is a niche industry where all, irrespective of gender, must work equally hard in an international setting and continuously improve by seeking knowledge. It is also an industry that promotes networking, therefore it is important to make connections, pick the brains of experienced people and also contribute at the same time.
We have strong female role models and by promoting them could certainly lead to more recruitment of women in the industry, while retaining the excellent talented women.
