Every year on this day, we celebrate the historical, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is beyond doubt that women are invaluable in today’s society, but remain significantly underrepresented in leadership.
According to the latest estimates from UN Women, gender equality is “300 years away”. Women leaders are just as ambitious as men, but at many companies, they face obstacles that make it harder to advance. Data show that only one in four C-suite leaders is a woman. It is concerning that yet today just very few companies adopt diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and prioritize flexibility and employee well-being.
It is more crucial than ever to realise that when we embrace equity, we forge harmony and unity, and help drive success for our businesses, as labour shortages are just around the corner.
This is also the day to appreciate the invaluable efforts of Women in Shipping!
I was lucky enough in my life to have a strong mother, a stronger grandmother and a supportive grandfather who encouraged me to follow my dreams. But also, since the early stages of my career, I have been surrounded by very capable women and visionary leaders who encouraged me to carve my path forward. We need to realise that forging gender equity isn’t limited to women. Allies are incredibly important for the advancement of women.
As a proud member of WISTA global network, I encourage women to join forces and work for a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated.
Let’s help women spread their wings and fly higher. Let’s shout out loud: We are stronger together!
