Yesterday’s protests attracted more people than expected either by the unions or the police in Paris, cities and towns across France. The far-left CGT union said 3.5 million were on the streets, while the police said the figure was 1.089 million. More than 200 were arrested.

Supermarket chain Carrefour has extended CEO Alexandre Bompard’s term for another three years. Last month Carrefour expressed confidence over its 2023 financial outlook as it reported record free cash flow of 1.26 billion euros and another rise in full-year operating profit despite high inflation. Bompard has a fixed salary of 1.5 million euros, plus performance bonuses.
