With “The Boors”, Carlo Goldoni’s masterpiece, which was first staged in Venice, in 1760 and is presented in Athens until 14.5.2023 at “131 PIRAEUS” theatre (Mondays to Saturdays at 21.00 and Sundays at 19.30), the author contrasts the old world of Venice with a more feminine cunning and reasonable microworld.

At the same time, he raises the question of gender equality through four men of extraordinary conservative roughness, on the one hand, and their lightly chatty wives, on the other, thus leaving behind a comedy of characters, touching on ethography or study of morals.

The story takes place in Venice, during the carnival season and has for its main characters four boorish people (“people of ill-tempered and unsociable character”, as Goldoni himself describes them). On the occasion of an upcoming wedding, a war breaks out between the old and the new world, as well as the mentality of the peasants, who are used to making decisions without consulting anyone, versus the new mentality represented by the women and the young people.
