Today, the 18th of May 2023, marks the second year that we celebrate the International Day for Women in Maritime. It is a momentous occasion for women in the maritime industry and it finds me in my office with a heavy workload and numerous impending deadlines. It is one of those challenging days when you feel overwhelmed, having had enough after countless busy days and sleepless nights, leaving you with little energy to persevere.
However, the global celebrations of women in maritime have reminded me today of my immense passion for my work. They have prompted me to reflect on my journey, from where I started to where I am now, as well as the goals I strive to achieve. They have reminded me of the colleagues, students, family and friends who believe in me and support me wholeheartedly. They have also reminded me of the other incredibly exceptional and inspirational women in maritime, whom I have met throughout my professional career. Women just like me, who persist and thrive in their roles, despite the challenges they face in a male-dominated industry or the hardships in their lives.
Today, I simply want to remind all of you that you are amazing, powerful and important. You are worth everything and more.
We are women in maritime and together we are stronger!
