Global conference of the IMO women in maritime Associations
“Mobilising networks for gender equality”
18-19th May 2023 – IMO HQ London
Kitack Lim acknowledged there is still a significant gender imbalance in Maritime, and that more needed to be done to accelerate change.
Presentations started from the eight Women in Maritime associations followed by WISTA international and IMOGender Network.
The conversations throughout the day stressed the importance of mentoring and networking, however, it was also interesting to hear from a director of White Ribbon, who stressed the importance of men as allies of gender equality. Women can be stereotyped into careers and behaviours, actually so are men, we need to raise our sons and daughters to have mutual respect and support for one another.
Gender equality begins in childhood, and we are all responsible for gender equality, not only in changing things now, but knowing how we raise our children will impact on this for the future. We must set an example.

Another interesting discussion was around welcoming our differences. Men and women have different positive traits and complement each other, resulting in better decisions and better run companies.
