Shipbuilding Contracts, Technological Innovation and Decarbonisation
Co-hosted by Norton Rose Fulbright and Quadrant Chambers, this event will be held on 14 September 2023 08:30-10:30 at Norton Rose Fulbright, 3 More London Riverside, London, SE1 2AQ.
For shipping to meet global decarbonisation objectives, new technology and alternative fuels will be critical. The recent boom in demand for newbuilding vessels has been driven partly by the need to move away from older vessels which will struggle to meet increasingly stringent decarbonisation targets. New vessels will have to adopt new technology such as using novel fuels including ammonia, dual fuel engines, fuel cells, battery power, carbon capture, shore power connections, sails and other innovations.
However, with new technologies come new risks for both buyers of newbuilding vessels, technology providers and shipyards.
Poonam Melwani KC will moderate an interactive panel discussion on how shipbuilding contracts will have to adapt – covering the risks, complications, opportunities and ways to manage them. Poonam will be joined by James Turner KC, Charlotte Winter, Ieronymos Bikakis and Andrew Craig-Bennett, columnist, “Splash 24/7”.
Spaces will be allocated will be on a first come, first served basis.

Ship recycling – has the industry met its own perfect storm?
Norton Rose Fulbright and Maritime London joined forces to organise the ‘Ship recycling – has the industry met its own perfect storm?’ event held as part of the London International Shipping Week 2023 on September 14 2-4pm at the offices of Norton Rose Fulbright, 3 More London Riverside, London, SE1 2AQ.
With the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships entering into force in two years’ time, will this bring a change for the industry and make recycling of ships easier, or will it change little in practical terms? With the influx of newbuild box ships soon to enter the market and IMO decarbonisation regulations making older ships difficult to trade, BIMCO estimates 15,000 ships will need recycling in the next ten years.
Against an uncertain macroeconomic backdrop, the demand for sustainable recycling of vessels, and a complex and fragmented regulatory framework, make compliance and the physical scrapping of deep-sea tonnage challenging.
Join Jos Standerwick, Chief Executive, Maritime London, as he moderates a panel discussion exploring how the sector will respond to the current market conditions, what shipowners should be considering when thinking of the life cycle of the asset, the role that ship recycling plays in the industry’s wider ESG obligations and what other market participants need to consider. He will be joined by Philip Roche (London) and Michael Jurgen Werner (Brussels) of Norton Rose Fulbright, and Dr Anil Sharma, Founder & CEO, GMS to cover all angles of this interesting topic.
