Introduction
On the vibrant evening of October 10, 2023, Pennington Manches Cooper played host to Diwali celebrations organized by two prominent maritime organizations, Indian Maritime Association U.K. ( IMA UK) and Women’s International Shipping and Trade Association UK ( WISTA UK ). This event not only commemorated the Festival of Lights but also highlighted the significance of diversity in the shipping industry and the growing relations between India and the United Kingdom. Dave Whyte, Deputy Director, Maritime, Department for Transport (DfT), was the special guest and graced the occasion with his insightful words on India-U.K. relations and diversity in shipping, leaving the attendees inspired.

The Spirit of Diwali
Diwali, the Hindu festival celebrated by millions around the world, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. It is a time for families and communities to come together, exchange gifts, light oil lamps, and share delicious food. It’s also a time for reflection and gratitude.
At the Diwali event held at Pennington Manches Cooper, this essence of Diwali was beautifully captured. The venue was adorned with decorations, wonderful food and drink, and the soft glow of diyas (oil lamps), creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

WISTA U.K. and IMA U.K.: Leading the Way
WISTA (Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association) U.K. and IMA (Indian Maritime Association) U.K. are two influential organizations that have been at the forefront of promoting diversity and inclusion within the maritime and shipping industry. WISTA U.K. is dedicated to empowering women in maritime, while IMA U.K. focuses on strengthening ties between the Indian and U.K. maritime sectors.

Together, these organizations have been working tirelessly to foster inclusivity and gender equality in the traditionally male-dominated shipping industry. The Diwali event served as a testament to their commitment to promoting diversity and unity.
