Dr. Chris Leontopoulos

Last December, Chris Leontopoulos, VP, ABS Global Ship Systems Center, was invited by the National Technical University of Athens, to give an honorary lecture on “Application of Customized FEA Software for Vessels’ Machinery Review”. The audience consisted of both undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as professors from the University’s School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.

The advantages of customizing large commercial FEA platforms in performing repeatable modelling and analyses’ work include high quality calculations through access to the latest solvers, the latest standard-approved elements, and high-quality advanced graphics and visualization pre- and post-processing techniques. Most general-purpose finite element platforms have representations in most countries globally and therefore, support and training is readily available for new users. Succession in knowledge, experience and modelling can be more readily addressed when there is a disruption in the field of development when comparing with in-house own code development. Versatility and cost-effectiveness are also benefits when considering multi-national work in 3 major time zones using web-floating licensing and including various engineering disciplines simultaneously, such as structural, thermal and fluid dynamics.

Dr Chris Leontopoulos demonstrated live a number of software engineering examples, accomplished through customized engineering routines of a general-purpose FEA platform (ANSYS).
