Honouring the Unsung Heroines – The Women of The Greek War for Independence 2021

Dear Readers,

Happy International Women’s Day!

Today,as we commemorate the achievements, resilience, and contributions of women worldwide, we take a moment to reflect on the extraordinary women who played a pivotal role in the Greek Revolution of 1821. Their stories, often overlooked, are a testament to the strength and courage of women throughout history.

When people think of the 1821 Greek Revolution, they typically think of General Theodoros Kolokotronis, Petros Mavromichalis and Georgios Karaiskakis. But the role the Greek women played in the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire also helped shape the course of Greece’s fight for freedom in 1821.

Bouboulina –Maritime Pioneer: Laskarina Bouboulina, a fearless naval commander, played a crucial role in the struggle for Greek independence. Her leadership and strategic acumen earned her a place in history as a symbol of resistance against oppression.

Manto Mavrogenous – Philanthropist and Warrior: An influential figure and financial supporter of the revolution, used her wealth to fund the cause. Her charisma and determination inspired others to join the fight for independence.

Domna Visvizi –Bouboulina of Thrace: Domna denied the comforts of a rich life and dedicated herself to the Revolution. She was initiated into the Friendly Society and after the death of her husband, Antonis Visvizis, she took over as captain of their ship, which became known in history as “the Domna Brewery.”

In the midst of the Greek War of Independence, countless women stepped forward to contribute to the cause. While history often focuses on the male leaders, it is essential to recognize the unsung heroines who shaped the course of the revolution.

These women, from all walks of life, demonstrated unwavering dedication to the fight for freedom. Countless women, from all social classes, contributed in various ways, including nursing wounded soldiers, acting as couriers, and providing intelligence to there volutionary forces. Their stories may be less documented, but their impact was immeasurable.

Women from Souli, such as Despo Botsi, Moscho Tzavella, Eleni and Chrysoula Botsari and Haido Giannaki. Women from Missolonghi and Mani who participated in battles and sieges, women from Veria and Naoussa such as Karatasina and Zafeiraki.

It is a general finding that the war was not about women; it is a matter for men and that the revolution created little hope for the position of women, as they themselves did not save their thoughts and feelings, being in most cases illiterate. Only later in the 19th century did women produce written works, and then only in cases where they came from important families. Travellers also commented on their lives, noting their hard daily life.

In folk songs, expressing the feelings and memories of an entire nation through time these heroines are described as models of action and behaviour. Thus, reference is made to not only the renowned but also the anonymous women from Missolonghi and Mani but also to surnamed ones, mainly from noble families. These fearless heroines had an active role in the war; they organised troops, financially assisted in the struggle, in the care of the sick and in the supply of the fighters.

After the establishment of the new state, the majority of women were excluded from political life, while their exclusion from voting was self-evident.

The women of the Greek Revolution left an enduring legacy, paving the way for future generations. Their resilience, sacrifices, and determination continue to inspire women across the globe. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let us remember and honour these trailblazers who defied societal norms to shape the destiny of a nation. This is our legacy of empowerment to be passed on to future generations.

Share this newsletter with your friends, family, and colleagues to spread awareness about the remarkable women of the Greek Revolution.

Wishing you a wonderful International Women’s Day filled with inspiration and empowerment!
