There is great support for cruise tourism on Bornholm among the island’s residents, who see it as value-creating and positive that cruise ships come to the island. This is shown by a study of Bornholm’s attitude to cruises.

The cruise season has just ended, and it was also proof of the great local support. With over 60 cruise calls, the island’s commercial life and sights have benefited from the increased activity, which, according to the people of Bornholm, creates value and strengthens Bornholm as an attractive tourist destination.

The study, which was carried out by the analysis agency Opinion & The Other One, shows that a majority of Bornholmers see cruise tourism as an advantage for the island’s economy and tourism profile. Especially shops, cafes, restaurants and attractions in and around Rønne benefit from the many visitors, but the cruise guests also contribute with both turnover and attention, which reinforces Bornholm’s position as an attractive tourist destination.

In addition to the economic benefits, the people of Bornholm also see cruise tourism as an important factor in the island’s marketing. The many international guests who visit Bornholm through cruises bring the island’s charm home with them and create an increased interest in the island as a tourist destination.

“The 2024 tourism season has successfully emphasized Bornholm’s strengths as a cruise destination in Denmark and the Baltic Sea region. It is therefore also very positive that there is great support for a cruise on Bornholm. We see cruises as an important business area that can strengthen and develop Bornholm as Denmark’s best tourist destination,” says Jeppe la Cour, commercial director of Rønne Havn A/S.

Destination Bornholm is also happy about the great support for cruise tourism on Bornholm.

“It is gratifying that the vast majority of Bornholm people see a positive value in cruise tourism. This is also the feedback we get from large parts of the Bornholm tourism industry. Cruise tourism creates value for Bornholm, i.a. for retail, restaurants, artisans and attractions, but also for business groups that may not be immediately visible to the average Bornholmer, such as bus companies and guides. Finally, the cruise guests contribute to activity outside the summer, which is part of the Bornholm tourism strategy,” says Gitte Tvilling, managing director of Destination Bornholm.
