Nuclear-powered LNG carriers: ABS study builds on marine nuclear momentum
The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has taken a step forward in the exploration of advanced nuclear technology for maritime applications, releasing a study that delves into the feasibility and safety implications of nuclear propulsion for shipping. Conducted in collaboration with Herbert Engineering Corporation (HEC), the study examined the impact of a high-temperature, gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) on the design, operations, and greenhouse gas emissions of a 145,000 cubic metre LNG carrier.
DNV and IRS join NEMO
Classification societies DNV and the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) have joined the Nuclear Energy Maritime Organization (NEMO). These additions strengthen NEMO’s growing roster, which already includes American Bureau of Shipping, Lloyd’s Register, Bureau Veritas, RINA, and the Korean Register.
