The Oinoussian Ball 2024

OBF President John M Hadjipateras addressing the room.

On Saturday 23rd November 2024, as London experienced the howling forceful winds and rain of storm Bert, the Oinoussian Ball welcomed its guests, old and new, from London, Geneva, Zurich and Athens, at a new venue, the Saint George Ballroom at The Peninsula, Belgravia. Almost 450 guests arrived at 7 pm, undeterred by the inclement weather and proceeded to enjoy a most memorable evening in this spectacular new environment.

The tables were adorned with delightful seasonal bouquets, a going away gift of olive oil and honey from the monastery of Ormylia and Christmas crackers to herald the beginning of the Festive Season.

The OBF President, John M. Hadjipateras addressed the room with an entertaining speech, inviting the guests to participate in a game of ‘Know Your Oinoussians’! He applauded the presence of so many young attendees and reminded everyone how and why this Fund, at 82 years young, plays such an important role in keeping the island’s inhabitants prosperous in all aspects of their lives.

The food was an eclectic mix of a goat’s cheese entree, a beef fillet main and a honey, walnut and fig tart for dessert. Along with the wines on the tables, this satisfied even the most discerning palates.

Our resident DJ Avougstinos Galiassos introduced the room to the beautiful Naya Douka, who serenaded the diners with her vocals and after the dessert, the room transformed into the most wonderful party with an extensive mix of Greek and popular international music. The guests congregated onto the dance floor and they never sat down. The atmosphere was electric. Those who wanted to step off the stage made their way to the photobooth where pictures and memories of a memorable evening were created.

A full dance floor.

At around midnight, the raffle draw was announced and seventeen prizes were awarded to the happy recipients. There was also an ongoing silent auction with seven diverse prizes that attracted a lot of bidding.

The guests returned to the dance floor for some traditional Greek island dances and the energy in the room was reignited once more. Friends and strangers linked arms as they danced in large circles and the joy and pleasure of all was unconfined.

When the DJ played his last song and the room lights began to get brighter, it was difficult to believe it had reached 2 am. The room slowly emptied with people holding their goody bags, souvenir brochures and some lucky winners walked away with the table bouquets.

Congratulations to all those involved at OBF for arranging a truly breathtaking event in the confines of this striking new hotel. The conviviality and harmony of the Oinoussian Ball continues to leave indelible marks of contentment on all who attend.
