Crisis management and tourism are deeply intertwined, a reality that becomes even more apparent during challenging times. Despite the resilience the tourism industry has displayed in recent years, it remains a sensitive product that requires constant vigilance and preparedness, regardless of the economic climate.
This critical message was conveyed to a large group of students from the hospitality sector at Leeds Beckett University, who were eager to learn from industry experts about the complexities of crisis management. Addressing this challenging topic and engaging young people during stressful times might not seem like an appealing subject. However, the speakers unanimously agreed that it is the rewarding nature of the job that motivates professionals to continue working, even in the face of natural disasters.
The event featured insightful contributions from Eleni Skarveli, Director of GNTO UK & Ireland, who shared her collective experience in navigating the Rhodes wildfires; Heather Pennock from ABTA, who highlighted the vital role and guidance offered by ABTA in such crises; Iain Bough of Jet2, who shared his strategic planning insights; Matt Gatenby, who provided a legal perspective; Miles Manning, who brought forward unique stories from his time with Scotland Yard; and Mark Bradley, who discussed the psychological aspects of crisis management.
The event, which was successfully put together by Dr. Kyriaki Glyptou, concluded with a great wrap-up from Rebecca Pearce of TUI.
Additionally, students had the opportunity to inquire about #Santorini’s current situation, hoping for a positive resolution in the coming weeks, free from further crisis management challenges. This engaging discussion underscores the importance of preparedness and collaboration in the tourism industry, no matter the circumstances.
