For Greeks in London and beyond, Easter is more than a holiday; It’s a deeply spiritual and cultural experience. This year, why not celebrate it on the enchanting island of Astypalea? Known as the “butterfly” of the Aegean, this alternative destination offers a unique blend of tradition, nature, and heartfelt hospitality.

As spring awakens, Astypalea transforms into a colorful paradise. The rocks burst with fragrant thyme, sage, and wildflowers, while the azure sea calms under the embrace of the gentle sun. Easter on this island is a journey of faith, tradition, and togetherness, a celebration unlike any other.

Holy Week: A Journey of Faith

Easter celebrations begin with Holy Week, marked by deeply spiritual church services. Each evening, worshippers gather in historic churches, such as the iconic Lady Portaitissa beneath the Venetian Castle, where Byzantine hymns and flickering candlelight create a mystical ambiance.

Please note: The church of Lady Portaitissa is currently under renovation following a devastating fire that destroyed it in October 2023.

Holy Thursday

On Holy Thursday, Astypaleans follow time-honored traditions, dyeing eggs a deep red to symbolize Christ’s blood. Women gather in their homes to prepare ‘lamprokouloura’ (Easter bread), filling kitchens with the comforting scent of cinnamon and sugar.

Good Friday

The scent of wild saffron fills the air as traditional ‘Kitrinokouloura’ (saffron biscuits) and Astypalean pies, such as ‘lampropites’ and ‘pouggia’ with local cheese, are lovingly prepared.

Holy Saturday

As midnight approaches, locals and visitors gather at Saint Nikolaos in Gialos, Lady Portaitissa, and other churches to celebrate the Resurrection. The moment ‘Christos Anesti’ is declared, the night sky lights up with fireworks, and joyous embraces are exchanged.

A fascinating rivalry unfolds between Lady Portaitissa and Saint Nikolaos, as both churches compete in a dazzling fireworks display that turn the night sky into day, making it an unforgettable spectacle for all who witness it.

Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday is a feast for the senses. The “burning of Judas” custom takes place, marking the beginning of the celebration. The air fills with the sound of violins and lutes, accompanying a lavish meal of ‘Gemisto’—a dish of lamb or goat stuffed with rice, liver, and spices, slowly roasted overnight in a wood-fired oven.

As the sun sets over the Aegean, laughter, music, and the scent of roasted lamb blend into a celebration to remember. In Astypalea, Easter is not just a holiday—it’s a heartfelt journey of faith and tradition.
