Chios, May 8, 2025* – Last night, the walls of Chios City Hall were transformed into a vivid surface of awareness and reflection on climate change, through an action by the Chios Climate Chance (CCC) program.
The facade of the building “spoke” to the public, as a projector displayed powerful, real messages about the climate crisis and the need for action. Messages included:
- Plastic straws are not recyclable.
- Plastic never disappears – it breaks down into micro- and nanoplastics.
- Each week, we consume about 5g of plastic – the equivalent of a credit card.
- In 2023, 7.7 million people were displaced from their homes due to floods, wildfires, and other natural disasters.
The projection caught the attention and interest of passersby of all ages and will continue in the coming days, giving the city’s walls a new role: to tell the truth about the environment and mobilize citizens.
The CCC project is implemented by the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association – HELMEPA, with co-funding from the “Maria Tsakos” Public Benefit Foundation and the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation.
In just one year, the program has engaged more than 5,000 residents of Chios of all ages in activities that inform, raise awareness, and encourage participation. Through CCC’s digital toolkit and initiatives in schools, local organizations, and the wider community, Chios residents are becoming Climate Ambassadors, sending a message that starts from the island and speaks to all: We have the power. We have the tools. We are aware. The decision is what remains.”
The actions continue across the island.
