  • Harnessing aerodynamic enhancements to vessels, reducing fuel consumption in commercial shipping by up to 5%

London, 28 May 2025 – Lomar’s corporate venture lab, lomarlabs, is collaborating with BlueNose, a pioneering maritime technology company, to optimise ship aerodynamics through AI-assisted design and the use of advanced materials. By integrating fluid dynamics with cutting-edge shape generation, BlueNose is set to enhance fuel efficiency in commercial vessels, reducing fuel consumption by up to 5%.

This collaboration marks a step towards a bluer, more efficient future at sea, reinforcing the industry’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. BlueNose’s algorithmically guided optimised structures are strategically placed at the front of ships to minimise air resistance, leading to substantial fuel savings, lower emissions, and reduced operational costs.

Developed through close collaboration with leading academic researchers, and industry experts at the forefront of climate technology and innovation, this modular system – now gearing up for real-seagoing deployment following extensive testing in simulated environments – is designed for use across a wide range of commercial vessels.

BlueNose’s groundbreaking work has earned them recognition as one of the 2024 Terra CartaDesign Lab Winners, a prestigious initiative championed by King Charles III to promote sustainable solutions. The company was founded by Léon Grillet and Joë Sangar while studying at the Royal College of Art (RCA). With support from InnovationRCA, the RCA’s award-winning incubator, they have continued refining and commercialising their technology.

Stylianos Papageorgiou, Managing Director of lomarlabs, emphasised the collaboration’s impact: “BlueNose exemplifies the forward-thinking innovation we champion at lomarlabs. By combining advanced materials and AI-assisted aerodynamics design, they create versatile and lightweight structures which we are hoping to quickly deploy on vessels, setting new standards for conversion and efficiency improvement. We are excited to support their journey and bring tangible fuel savings to the maritime industry.”

Léon Grillet, CEO & Co-Founder of BlueNose, added: “What started as a student project is now shaping the future of maritime sustainability. Partnering with lomarlabs allows us to accelerate the adoption of our technology, bringing real impact to the shipping sector. Together, we are reducing emissions and driving change.”

Nicholas Georgiou, CEO of Lomar Shipping, highlighted the importance of industry collaboration: “In August 2024, the BlueNose team joined Lomar’s newbuilding projects team in China, touring shipyards and engaging with suppliers to gain firsthand insight into shipbuilding, retrofitting challenges, and commercial dynamics. This is just one example of how Lomar and lomarlabs support early-stage startups by offering them direct access and impactful exposure to the industry.”
