| UNITED STATES COAST GUARD (USCG) MARINE SAFETY ALERT: NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED TESTING LABORATORY (NRTL) LISTED FIRE DETECTION SYSTEMS FOR TOWING VESSELS |
| Reference is made to the June 4, 2025 USCG Marine Safety Alert 13-25, Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory Listed Fire Detection Systems, that brings attention to fire detection systems that may be NRTL-approved but may have potential shortcomings and oversight gaps that may not make them fit for purpose for use aboard towing vessels. The USCG has a set of recommendations that vessel owners, vessel crews, fire alarm servicing personnel and third party surveyors should consider for ensuring such systems work and comply with the requirements under 46 CFR § 142.330(a)(1) through (a)(6). |
