British Marine launches new water safety courses to support staff working near inland waters and tidally affected marinas

British Marine has launched two new accredited training courses to enhance water safety awareness and emergency response for those working close to the water’s edge across the non-tidal inland and tidally affected marina sectors.

The Inland Water Safety Management and Marina Water Safety Management courses are designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and practical skills to operate safely within three metres of water—whether from a riverbank, dockside, or aboard a vessel. Both courses are delivered by leading industry trainers at Birmingham and Midland Marine Services Ltd, partnered by Atlantic Crest for the tidal marina course, and are accredited by the Institute of Search and Technical Rescue.

These one-day, modular courses are ideal for a wide range of roles, including workboat, passenger and trip boat crews, marina and boatyard staff, customer-facing personnel, rangers, wardens, and anyone responsible for safety and emergency preparedness in a waterside environment.

The Inland Water Safety Management course is tailored to those working in the non-tidal inland waterways sector – outside the remit of the DEFRA Flood Rescue Concept of Operations and CDM Regulations. It provides a grounded understanding of water-related risks, incident prevention strategies, and emergency response, including practical rescue techniques and decision-making under pressure.

Meanwhile, the Marina Water Safety Management course is designed specifically for staff working in tidally affected marinas and harbours, offering the same robust training but adapted for the unique challenges posed by coastal environments, including changing water levels, reduced visibility, and dynamic tidal conditions.

Manj Mahey, Head of Training at British Marine, commented: “Working near water brings unique challenges and risks, and it is crucial that everyone – from marina staff to boat crews – is prepared with the right training. These new courses have been developed in response to feedback from our members and represent a proactive step in raising safety standards across the industry. Whether you are on the riverbank or in a tidal marina, knowing how to prevent incidents and respond effectively can save lives.

Each course is led by experienced instructors with real-world backgrounds in maritime operations, risk management, and emergency response, ensuring that participants gain both theoretical knowledge and practical, actionable skills.
