Capt. Antonio M. Padrón y Santiago, “IMO Maritime Ambassador” and Maritime Authority of Tenerife attended the presentation of the Regatta ATLANTIC ODYSSEY, with 2, 810 nautical miles between Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Martinique.
The port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife hosted the starting point of this non-competitive transatlantic race “Atlantic Odyssey” to the Caribbean, meeting for which seventeen ships with sixty crew members, including seven children were enrolled.
During the presentation, the IMO Maritime Ambassador addressed the participants highlighting the example of these groups of friends and families that, with this important challenge, demonstrate their deep love to the sea and water sports.
This race is one of a larger group that throughout this year 2016 will depart towards the
Caribbean from Tenerife. Thus begins the realization of one of the objectives of the provincial
Port Authority promoting the local marinas, making them internationally well known as a
benchmark for this kind of regattas.
In the Atlantic Odyssey, according to the organization, Cornell saililng Events, “the
competition is not really important, but enjoy and learn about life at sea.” Given this
approach, Ports of Tenerife prepared a program of related events with the purpose of
promoting the island and the attractions of the capital for adults and children.
The registered boats were concentrated in Marina Santa Cruz, in front of the Cabildo building,
enjoying the crew of the Christmas holidays on the island. Before their departure they
collected everything, from food to the usual tools, as well as prepare their boats for the sea
passage.
The race organizer Mr. Jimmy Cornell said that “Tenerife has great maritime potential will
enable the joint organization of many more such events in the near future.”
Meanwhile, the Port Authority of Tenerife has advanced that this year already confirmed other
five nautical events in Santa Cruz, being a sign of interest in relaunching the activity in the
local marinas.
Besides Mr. Antonio M. Padrón, IMO Maritime Ambassador, in the presentation of the regatta
were present: Mr. José M. Conejo, President of the Real Club Nautico de Tenerife, Mr. José R.
Diaz, Director of the Port Authority of Tenerife, Mr. Jimmy Cornell, organizer of the event and
Mr. Airam Diaz, Commercial Director of the Port Authority of Tenerife.
