CEO’s Summary

The Autumn (Fall) period has been dominated by the inaugural International Maritime Human Rights Conference 2016 held in London. This was a genuine success with delegates attending from around the world resulting in significant interest in the topics covered from 20 speakers over nine hours in four main session areas of discussion. Conference details and access to materials can be found below.The charity is further able to report on our successful Internship Programme and the experiences of our Erasmus Intern, Melanie Glodkiewicz, seconded to the German Sea-Watch NGO working offshore Libya and delivering unique insights via her blogs and articles, the increasing distribution of our ‘Managing Traumatic Stress publication written with Professor Neil Greenberg and published by The Nautical Institute, and our joint submission to the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights and the Environment. Our inputs to the Missing Seafarer and Fishers Reporting Programme continue as cases are submitted to the database.Finally, in this last quarter of 2016, the Charity will aim to finalise and distribute a new seafarer-focused e-learning course, it will attend several high-level crew and CSR conferences, and release a major new case study and academic review.

International Maritime Human Rights Conference 2016 “Respect, Responsibility and Remedy in the Maritime Environment”A successful inaugural conference has led to a large response asking for access to materials. As part of one of our core values of transparency all videos are now available online from the HRAS website and our YouTube Channel. IMHR has now been confirmed as the new future conference platform for the charity.

Managing Traumatic Stress

Authored by Professor Neil Greenberg, Managing Director of March on Stress and Professor of Defence Mental Health at King’s College London on behalf of Human Rights at Sea, the new publication, “Managing Traumatic Stress – Guidance for Maritime Organisations” aims to provide a top-level guidance to senior management to help improve the mental health of seafarers by providing education and evidence-based approaches within the maritime industry.

HRAS Intern Reporting from offshore Libya

Melanie Glodkiewicz, a Human Rights at Sea intern, is currently seconded to the German NGO Sea-Watch with their vessel Sea-Watch 2 operating off the Libyan coast. There, she is a core member of the ship’s crew and runs the HRAS-SeaWatch online English blog.

In her first video report, Melanie describes her experiences on her first mission from the deck of Sea-Watch 2 as it sails back to Malta to replenish stores. This includes her first experiences of rescuing men, women and children from the Mediterranean waters. Watch Melanie’s first Video Blog

HRAS attends Lloyds List Annual Awards 2016 as a Judge

CEO, David Hammond, attended the 2016 Lloyds List Annual Awards held at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich on 28 September 2016 as one of the 11-strong judging panel and as the sole civil society judge. Working alongside the heads and representatives of the likes of BIMCO, ICS, Intertanko and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, this was the first time that a non-welfare maritime charity had been invited to review and judge the submissions from the maritime industry.

HRAS speaks at 22nd European Maritime Law Organisation Annual Conference 2016

CEO, David Hammond, was invited to speak at the 22nd European Maritime Law Organisation (EMLO) Annual Conference held in London on Wednesday 29 September at Mission de Reya LLP where he briefed the full scope of the charity’s work to a commercial legal audience. Introduced by Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, President of EMLO, the first President of the UK Supreme Court (2009 – 2012) and appointed Lord Chief Justice in 2005, EMLO was established to provide a neutral and independent forum for debate and research on issues of interest to those concerned with EU maritime affairs.

HRAS speaks at 4th Operational Maritime Law NATO conference, Turku, Finland

CEO, David Hammond, was invited to attended the 4th NATO Operational Maritime Law conference 3-6 October organised by the NATO Centre of Excellence for Operations in Confined and Shallow Waters held at the Finish Headquarters in Turku, Finland. There, he presented the charity’s work for the first time to over 80 military and political delegates from 20 countries including representatives of the US Naval War College, EUNAVFOR, NATO, multiple EU State’s representatives and senior officers of the Kuwaiti Navy.

Joint submission to the UN Rapporteur on Human Rights at the Environment

Alongside eight other internationally recognised NGOs, Human Rights at Sea has been engaged with and leant its weight to a core working group looking at the continued exploitation of fisheries workers at sea and the connections between human rights and labour abuses in the fishing sector with the practices of overfishing and illegal, unreported, unregulated (IUU) fishing.
