Capers volatility lift the BDI and Wets too amid nature’s tempest…

The BDI (Baltic Dry Index) gained another 36 points earlier on and now reads 1,332; on a weekly basis it was up 150 points raising hopes but we want you all to stay put until the BDI goes over and above the  2,200 points – the December 2013 level! The Wets were also up but with very little margins. The Geopolitics become very perplexed coupled with natures’ wrath. John Faraclas daily and weekly recap:

The Capers leading this volatile week and surge of triple digit plus points saw its BCI up 153 points to 2,767 which is also 503 points plus since last week’s 2,264… Caution though as we reiterate the view that one size doesn’t create a market and moreover a health and sustainable market!

The Panamaxes followed suit with the BPI gaining on a daily basis 24 points and on a weekly 177 points – from 1,198

The Supras and the Handies  were also up; the BSI managed to get a double digit plus points – 13 and now reads 888; on a weekly basis it was up 32 – from 856 points.

The BHSI  surpassed the 500 point threshold after …a while and now reads 504; on a weekly basis it was up 18 points – from 486.

So all in all the Dry Markets are up, but only because of the Capers and to a lesser extent by the other sizes – with the Panamaxes …leading the way! It was good to see some excellent period fixtures, particularly one on a Panamax twice plus more than its previous one!!

The containerships haven’t as yet produced any spectacular level of sustainable growth despite some improvement in the chartering rates, so be on guard… Meantime mega box ships between 20-22,000 TEU’s are soon going to be a reality; watch this space…

The Wets upwards trend was minimal; the last published BDTI (Dirties) and BCTI (Cleans) saw both types gaining on a daily basis just two points; on a weekly basis plus 24 for the Dirties  and  minus 94 for the Cleans; odd market with the hurricanes in the southern USA states bringing down the market…

The WTI although it went over the US$ 49 mark during the trading hours, it begun to drop close to US$ 47.50; last week it was US$ 47.38…

The Ballast Water Management era begun this morning!

The Geopolitical agenda is ultra-busy with the same issues as per our last month’s coverage.

The Migrants still on top; among other issues, other than those in the Med, in mainland Europe some states declining to accept Migrants to enter their borders, such as Hungary… Messy messy messy situation which we believe might go off hand soon with incalculable repercurssions for all.-

There are gains in the Wars in Syria and Iraq against the ISIS lot and the dozens of various groups there. D e v a s t a t i o n  is the name of the game! CAUTION as this creates more Migrants! Israel must be very cautious with its actions in the region, as pre-emptive defence and alliance obligations – even silent and confidential ones, must ensure the mess doesn’t spill over and Israelis avoid entering the conflict. A very delicate situation for Israel, but the Japanese example of staying put and cool says it all…

Turkey and Greece’s issues remain the same; more than caution! Turkey is on the brink of a possible internal clash; Erdogan creates mess and this backfires. Wonder how he will react with the forthcoming Iraqi Kurdish state… which we have referred to very recently…

Greece …”despite” Macron’s visit and “efforts” by the EU members  to save the day, will create devastation; things get sour! Bad recipes don’t work… After  the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair things will get sour…

Expect a chaotic BREXIT… as things turn sour for all! Pity as Brussels is to blame for and MIGRANTS too, hence the mess…

Looks likely that the USA’s southern states and the Caribbean are going to be battered and flattened  from hurricane Irma; a total recall situation… following Harvey’s mess left behind.  Devastation; expect even the worse to come. A very dangerous weekend lies ahead for the people there. No one can respond to natures’ wrath… Apocalypse is coming… For the Shipping industry continues to be a terrible event affecting many ships, ports and terminals, affecting also the price of oil – strange laws of demand and supply… Mess in Cuba too with electricity  cuts particularly in Habana…

Add the devastation from Mexico’s earthquake and tropical storm Katia and see what you get from natural effects… in the region of the USGulf… AND Caribbeans…

In the Pacific basin the main issue remains North Korea leaders’ attitude with nuclear tests and we warn of many difficult days ahead… China and Russian MUST assist, as thing will be for them devastating with incalculable repercurssions. Japan’s appropriate response must be expected…

In Africa now; is South Sudan ready for elections? And what about Libya’s inferno; yes inferno as few are properly reporting from this war-torn region…

The president of Vouliagmeni Nautical Club, Stella Lazarou-Tinga addressing the guests

On another tone now, “Enhancing Sea Sports through Shipping”  reception/event at the Vouliagmeni Nautical Club in southern Athens’ coast earlier on tonight was more than a success  attracting international guests too.

A sort and to the point speech was delivered by the president of the Club Stella Lazarou-Tinga who was warmly applauded by the guests.

All sectors of the Shipping industry were represented in support  of Sea Sports were the Club –  NOB, and Greece marvels in the  international stage. Guests remained until late enjoying the excellent buffet and drinks.

Many congratulations to NOB’s head  of events Maria Veniou for organising the event as well as to the sponsors and media supporters; Excellent!

Tomorrow the 8th Hydra Shipping Conference “Money talks but wealth whispers” begins; expecting a great debate on all shipping issues given the well construed agenda and speakers! The John Sahinis’ initiative works and it is now a well established conference!

The LISW 2017 begins on Monday in the British capital; Planet Ocean’s good and famous will tackle all issues bothering the shipping industry. Nothing will change for Shipping with or without BREXIT!

Have nice weekend and be on guard from Pirates and Terrorists wherever you are!
