Hands off the Hellenic Coast Guard officers

The Greek Ministry of Shipping and the Aegean which also houses the Hellenic Coast Guard’s HQ’s

To our great perplexity, we hear that the Greek minister of shipping and the Aegean has ordered the commandant of the Hellenic Coast Guard (HCG) to transfer to other posts the officers who dealt with the recent sinking and resultant pollution from the tanker Agia Zoni II at Piraeus.

If this is the case, this is a matter of wonder, as:

a)The secretary-general of the IMO in his statement during the recent Maritime Cyprus biennial event, congratulated the minister, Mr Kourouplis, on the way Greece dealt exceptionally and effectively with the pollution incident

b)A little earlier the director of the IOPC Fund similarly extended congratulations!

and

c) The minister himself via a statement congratulated the said officers…

The minister therefore is asked:

Did he or did he not deserve these congratulations as, according to his view and judgment now the handling of the matter was inappropriate, sufficient to justify his decision to transfer these officers – whom he is obliged to protect being their political master, as he should have done; or is there is something else, a skeleton in the cupboard?

We need to know what’s up!
