
Cleanup and recording of litter at Antheia beach
HELMEPA’s awareness-raising activities in the northern border’s-edge city of Alexandroupolis, Thrace in northrn Greece, the seventh stop of the Association’s “Marine Environment and Sciences Awareness Campaign”, have been successfully completed. The Campaign is carried out with the support of independent charity, Lloyd’s Register Foundation*(LRF), across twelve Greek cities.
In total, 1, 400 primary and high school students from schools in and around the city of Alexandroupolis visited the environmental Exhibition, which was kindly hosted for seventeen days at the MunicipalSocialCenter. There, they were informed about shipping, the environment, applied sciences and engineering. Transportation costs were covered by the program’s budget.
Within the framework of the Campaign, students from AntheiaHigh School went on an educational visit to the Evros River Delta, where they were updated by the Management Authority staff about the special wetland ecosystems. With the support of the competent Municipal department and HELMEPA’s staff, the students and their teachers then symbolically cleaned-up the local beach, which has been designated as a protected area.

HELMEPA wishes to thank Mayor, Mr. Evaggelos Lambakis and the Municipality of the city of Alexandroupolis and the Administration and staff of the SocialCenter for their warm hospitality and support as well as the Directorates of Primary and Secondary Education of Evros and the Coordinators of Schools’ Activities for organizing the schedules of school visits to the Exhibition. Moreover, the Association also extends its thanks to the Management Authority of the Evros River Delta and other local stakeholders, who “embraced” the Campaign, sending a strong message for marine environmental protection.
The next stop of the Campaign will be the island of Rhodes, where the awareness-raising activities will take place between 20th May and 7th June, under the auspices of the Municipality of Rhodes.
