75% of inland waterway transport is international. Rivers and canals link up cities and industrial centres across borders, creating true European added value. That’s why, together with our partners in inland waterway transport and other transport modes, we work on waterway and multimodal projects, greening transport, digitalisation and innovative infrastructure throughout Europe.

Inland Navigation Europe is the European platform of waterway authorities & organisations promoting transport by water. We work together to move more people and goods by water in regions & cities with navigable waterways to boost sustainable mobility.

Who we are & What we do

Our vision towards 2030
On 15 November 2017, INE and its partners European Barge Union, European Federation of Inland Ports and European Skippers’ Organisation shared their vision on green & smart logistics incl. the policy steps to get there with a delegation of the European Parliament and Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc.

Promoting innovation in logistics

The 2nd EU Naiades action programme is halfway and several innovative projects on waterway logistics and vessels are underway. Strong EU support in the form of coordination, regulation and funding is required to curb congestion by enhancing waterway solutions on short and long distances.

Infrastructure for better services
Cross-border waterways are public goods with high EU added value. In 2014-2017, the Connecting Europe Facility co-financed 52 inland waterway projects with 1.66 bilion. Next to clearing bottlenecks, whole-life-cycle management and regeneration improve performance to increase reliability and climate resilience.

Over 40 transport organisations, authorities, cities and industries, including INE, have teamed up to plead for more EU budget for transport to create a clean, safe and well working transport system which is accessible to all. Transport is the backbone for our society and economy. How to get to work, school and travel every day without transport?

Integrating the transport system
The deployment of River Information Services is still ongoing, but next steps in digitalisation are critically important for transport by waterways: the improvement of navigation and management of traffic across borders, the integration with other transport modes and the reduction of red tape.

Facts & figures
2017 has been a year of further growth on inland waterways with an increase in traffic volumes, even despite varying water levels. Behind the figures, freight transport markets are profoundly changing further to the energergy transition, decarbonisation and the upcoming circular economy.
