Inside ICHCA International – April/May  2019 issue

Welcome to the latest edition of Inside ICHCA International, our regular e-newsletter for association members, partners and cargo handling industry colleagues worldwide.

Unfortunately, despite its relentless focus on health and safety, the ports and logistics sector is still experiencing high levels of fatal and serious injuries. At a time of increased operational demands on cargo handling, the need to find innovative new solutions to safety has never been more pressing.

That is why ICHCA International is once again delighted to invite submissions for the “3rd TT Club Innovation in Safety Award.” This Award champions the many companies and individuals who are committed to ‘making it safe’ on a continuing basis.

ICHCA International continues to produce Cargo Handling Voice, a monthly news digest of industry, policy and regulatory developments related to safety, security, sustainability and efficiency in cargo handling across all transport modes and nodes.

If you have any news you would like to be considered for inclusion in future editions of Inside ICHCA International, please contact our Communications team. Don’t forget to add us to your mailing list. Happy reading!

Amanda has worked as a Personal Assistant/Executive Assistant in a variety of sectors including recruitment, property development and finance. For the last 12 years she has worked within the logistics industry at FTA. Her current role is Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief Executive at FTA and now also to the Head of ICHCA International. She provides day-to-day support, diary management, event/meeting organisation and ad hoc projects as they arise. In her spare time Amanda volunteers for a dog rescue charity.

Rona Hunnisett, Head of PR and Media Relations

Rona, who is an experienced PR and communications professional with more than 15 years in both agencies, in house and running her own business, leads FTA’s PR and communications team. She has worked at the Association for more than two and a half years. An experienced copywriter, Rona has created and implemented award-winning PR campaigns for brands and associations alike, using focused creativity to achieve impressive results across sectors from transport to healthcare, retail and consumer goods. She enjoys solving complex communications problems, using a wealth of PR tactics to achieve impressive results and will lead ICHCA’s content creation team to build international audiences for the Association and its work.

Carlie Nowell, Head of Events

Heading up FTA’s Events team since 2016, Carlie is responsible for the delivery of the Association’s growing events programme, which includes more than 50 events each year ranging from conferences and seminars to driving competitions and awards dinners. With more than 14 years’ experience in marketing and events, Carlie spent several years within FTA’s marketing team before moving into the Head of Events role. Prior to FTA, Carlie gained experience within the insurance and leisure sectors whilst completing marketing management and events qualifications.

Katia has more than 20 years’ experience in marketing management and planning, hands-on campaigns implementation, digital and traditional channels, marketing analysis and web management. Throughout her career Katia has delivered multiple successful projects for companies in both B2B and B2C markets. As part of the ICHCA secretariat team, she deals with marketing and communications planning, events support and web projects.

REPORT ON IMO’S MEPC#74 MEETING

At the recent MEPC (Maritime Environment Protection Committee of IMO) 74th session, a Resolution was agreed upon by member states and NGOs (non-governmental organisations) that encourages ‘voluntary co-operation’ between the port and shipping sectors to reduce GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions from ships.

In a move that commenced the year before at MEPC#73, where submissions for the next session were called for, this joint paper was submitted by a number of maritime administrations, led by Canada and a number of NGOs (in consultation with IMO) led by IAPH (International Association of Ports and Harbours).

ICHCA was originally going to co-sponsor this paper but concerns were expressed by some of our membership that this was potentially tantamount to ‘mission creep’ by IMO and may precipitate two potential courses of action, i.e:

1) IMO actually legislating for measures to be taken in ports and terminals;

2) responsibility for GHG emissions in ships being ‘watered down’ at the ship operator level.

Whilst in support of the paper in principle, our concerns were voiced from the floor of the plenary debate and noted in the report of the meeting.

Nevertheless, the submission was approved, and the Resolution duly adopted. The full text of the Resolution is inserted at the end of this article for ease of reference.

ICHCA INVITES SUBMISSIONS FOR THIRD TT CLUB INNOVATION IN SAFETY AWARD

ICHCA International has launched the 3rd TT Club Innovation in Safety Award and invites submissions from all involved in cargo handling and logistics who have shown a demonstrable improvement in operational safety.

The Award will be presented to the winning entrant by Heike Deggim, Director of the Maritime Safety Division at the International Maritime Organization at ICHCA’s international conference in Malta this November. The Award aims to highlight the importance of safety at a time of increased operational demands on cargo handling infrastructure and operations worldwide. The Award champions and celebrates the many companies and individuals around the world who are 100 per cent dedicated to ‘making it safe’ every day. Equally, it acknowledges and fosters innovation to improve safety in cargo operations and logistics.

ICHCA 20/20 CARGO VISION CONFERENCE – 11-14 NOVEMBER 2019

ICHCA’s 20/20 Cargo Vision conference and exhibition in Malta, on 11-14 November 2019, aims to facilitate dialogue, bring institutional and industry stakeholders together to develop mutual understanding, share experiences, explore innovation and review appropriate policy and regulation that can contribute to safe, clean, compliant and efficient cargo operations.

Shippers, carriers, ports and terminals, inland operators, regulators, researchers, educators, NGOs, equipment, technology, service providers and all those concerned with the safety, security and sustainability of cargo operations on land and at sea are invited to join us to help shape the future.

Kindly hosted by Malta Freeport Terminals, the 2019 ICHCA International 20/20 Cargo Vision Conference & Exhibition will feature a tour of the port and two full conference days alongside an exhibition, with plenty of high-level networking opportunities including Icebreaker Reception, Official Drinks Reception, third TT Club Innovation in Safety Award presented by IMO Safety Director Heike Deggim and second A.O John Strang Memorial Award.

The conference and exhibition will be followed by the 82nd meeting of ICHCA’s Technical Panel, a global volunteer group of industry professionals dedicated to fostering best industry practice to #makeitsafe.
