Paul Volcker and Wilhelm Nölling were united by staunch commitment to public service. Volcker, chair of the Federal Reserve in 1979-87, became a byword for steely resolve to combat inflation and the reckless waywardness of commercial bankers. Nölling, president of the Land central bank of Hamburg and member of the Bundesbank council in 1982-92, became well known in Germany as one of the ‘gang of four’ economics professors who filed constitutional lawsuits against introducing and developing the euro.
