COVID-19: Government Job Retention Scheme announced
Financial support for workers and the self-employed
On 20 March, the government also announced that pubs, restaurants and cafes are ordered to close from Friday evening and other leisure businesses as soon as possible to help fight the COVID-19 outbreak.
The latest major announcement is referred to as the COVID-19 Job Retention Scheme. The grant will cover up to 80% of the salary cost, capped at £2,500, per employee per calendar month and is backdated to 1 March 2020.
The government is also deferring VAT payments for this quarter, allowing a deferral of self-assessment tax and has delayed the start of interest charges from 6 to 12 months for the new business support loans.
