Commentary: China will put its own interests first in relationship with Russia

China is unlikely to deepen further its strategic alliance with Russia as the result of the war in Ukraine, for fear of suffering removal from the rewards of globalisation. At the same time, China and other countries will be looking closely at the repercussions of the western asset freeze against Russian state interests. This may encourage some countries to move away from the dollar and into assets more secure from seizure.

Commentary: Balanced, inclusive and green: rebalancing China’s economy

China rebounded strongly from the pandemic. However, growth is losing momentum and remains reliant on support from investment and exports, which threatens China’s transition to sustained, high-quality growth that’s balanced, inclusive and green. There are no easy answers to China’s many challenges. Helge Berger, China mission chief at the International Monetary Fund, joins OMFIF’s Mark Sobel to discuss the world’s second largest economy.
