Embracing Equity is the theme for International Women’s Day 2023 and globally extensive efforts are under way to make it easier for women in the workplace.

I have seen first hand how the maritime industry has improved access for female newcomers and how leading organisations are striving to ensure that women can better combine career and family. That said, women have always played a role in shipping and our industry must do more to raise the profile of female maritime prowess.

It is for this reason that I am very proud of the efforts that Lloyd’s Register Group and Foundation are undertaking to document historical accounts of women’s work in shipping via the Rewriting Women into Maritime History project (Introduction To Rewriting Women Into Maritime | Learn & Explore | Heritage & Education Centre (lrfoundation.org.uk)). We hope that this new research project, in conjunction with many other organisations, will contribute to the growing discourse of women’s history and help uncover forgotten stories.

Importantly, through raising awareness, we hope the initiative will help to encourage discussion and action on inequalities that still exist in the industry today
