The “Prevelis”

Ro-Ro/Passenger ship “Prevelis”, which served for years on the barren line in the southeast Aegean, sailed for a few days in the islands of the Northeast Aegean and in particular at the port of Chios. Some people complained about the age of the ship, but for shiplovers, it was an opportunity to see this Japanese ship with great history plying in Greek waters…

She was built in 1980 at the Shipyards of IMABARI SHIPBUILDING GROUP in Japan. Her first name was “FERRY ORANGE 2” and operated in Japan, connecting Tokyo with the surrounding ports. She has 142.5 meters loa and 23.50 meters breadth, while her draft is 5.52 meters. She travels at a speed of 19 knots and can accommodate up to 927 passengers and 310 vehicles. She has 251 beds and 179 airline seats.

In 1994 she was bought by Cretan Ferries company based in Rethymno and renamed “Preveli” serving the Piraeus-Rethymno route. In 2000 Cretan Ferries was acquired by ANEK Lines and in 2001 the ship was renamed “Prevelis”. She continued to serve the Piraeus-Rethymno route until 2007. In 2008 she was transferred to the Piraeus-Syros-Paros-Naxos-Ios-Santorini route, whilst since 2009 and for 14 years she has been serving one of the most demanding coastal ferry connections in Greece connecting the remote islands of Kasos and Karpathos on the line Piraeus-Milos-Santorini-Anafi-Heraklion-Sitea-Kasos-Karpathos-Halki-Rhodes.

We are indebted to Konstantinos Milt. Anagnostou, Photographer & Cinematographer who continues a unique cause in promoting Greece’s and its seamanship; viewers can log in the site and see over a dozen of ships maneuvering in Chios’ ports as well as other events. Log also on: www.chiosphotos.gr
