On the 16th of November 2023, Transaid celebrated its silver jubilee at the Transport Museum in Covent Garden, London, with more than 170 industry supporters, partners and development organisations.
After canapés, drinks, and speeches delivered by Joan Aitken, Chair of Transaid’s Board, and Andrew Malcolm, CEO of the Malcom Group, HRH The Princess Royal addressed guests with a powerful speech both celebrating Transaid’s essential work and reminding supporters of the great need for safe and accessible transport in sub-Saharan Africa.
Caroline Barber, CEO of Transaid, said: “I am immensely proud of all that Transaid, and our partners, have delivered over 25 years. We have grown the scale and impact of our work, improving access to healthcare services for communities in Africa, delivering pioneering road safety initiatives and working tirelessly to reduce death and injury on the roads.”
Transaid was founded 25 years ago by Save the Children, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (UK) and HRH The Princess Royal to address the lack of expertise on transport barriers in international development.
Looking to the future, Transaid is seeking to extend its road safety work, including its motorcycle safety work with the FIA Foundation in Kenya, and the next phase of Transaid’s bicycle ambulance project in Zambia.

Michelin delivers tyre safety training in Zambia and Ghana

Michelin training instructors Paul Ryder and Stephane Bonnard recently swapped the Midlands for sub-Saharan Africa, each successfully completing a week-long secondment with Transaid in Zambia and Ghana respectively.
They both delivered bespoke training tailored toward the needs of truck and bus driver trainers – supporting Transaid’s ‘train the trainer’ model, which aims to develop skills at a local level. The training covered tyre sidewall markings, vehicle configurations, wheel fixings, tyre fitting, wheel security, safe vehicle jacking procedures and how to inspect and assess damage.

Paul commented at the end of his secondment: “I felt a huge sense of satisfaction, as they’d been so receptive to the topics we were covering. I am confident our time together will help to create safer roads.”
GXO Graduate begins secondment in Zambia

Nicoletta Effah, a Graduate Operations Management Trainee for GXO, has embarked upon a six-month secondment as a Project Officer for Transaid, supporting our longstanding road safety project at the Industrial Training Centre (ITC) in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka.
Nicoletta says: “I know I can’t make a tangible change alone, so I wanted to join an organisation that could, and GXO’s graduate scheme has offered me this opportunity.”
