Cairo, Frankfurt, July 3rd, 2024

In the presence of the Egyptian Prime Minister, HE Moustafa Madbouly, DAI signed a Framework Agreement (FA) on Sunday, June 30th, 2024, with the Ministry of Electricity, The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE) and the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone). The FA sets the cornerstones to enable and accelerate large-scale production of green ammonia in East Port Said, Egypt.

DAI and Freepan aim to develop and operate the 2mtpa green ammonia plant in East Port Said, Egypt. Project Ra has already signed MOUs for the off take of green ammonia and plans to commence production in the second half of 2028. Most of the green ammonia is planned to be taken by shipping companies passing through the Suez Canal for use as alternative maritime fuel.

The Framework Agreement deepens the already excellent partnership and joint efforts for DAI to establish the project, strategically located on the Mediterranean side of the Suez Canal. DAI welcomes the strong support it receives from the SCZone, the Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), and the TSFE for their ongoing support of Project Ra in East Port Said.

Mr. Ioannis Papassavvas, CEO of DAI said that “this is an important step forward for the global transition, including for the maritime industry, to green ammonia. Egypt has many natural advantages that support an efficient green ammonia project Ra. The location of the plant within the harbour perimeter of East Port Said gives a natural advantage, as potential maritime fuel can be offered to customers while passing through the Suez Canal.”

Mr. Panagiotis Natsiopoulos, CEO & Chairman of Freepan and co-developer of Project Ra, is an energy transition asset owner, developer and operator that has been active in primary and secondary LNG and related shipping, envisions a future where the maritime industry is duty-bound to sail toward zero carbon emissions. As he often says, “In our journey to a greener future, innovation isn’t just an option—it’s our compass. With groundbreaking projects like Ra, we are obligated to leap into a sustainable path for the sake of our next generation, our seas, and our planet.”

The project was initiated in December 2022 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in Cairo, and the FA moves it to a deeper level of collaboration.
