International Women’s Day 2025 is yet another reminder of the importance of diversity across the shipping industry – of the solid achievements in advancing the role of women, but of the widespread acknowledgment that much remains to be done in this regard.
This topic has been, or in some cases, we could say ‘ought to have been’ high on the agenda of this most global of industries. It has been highlighted by the 50th anniversary of the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA), and the 51st year embarked upon by this splendid organisation needs to be a springboard for widening opportunities across Planet Ocean for the boundless talent that in many instances has yet to be recognised.
On this special day, we salute leading advocates for a renewed drive for greater female participation in the sector include IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez, WISTA International president Elpi Petraki, and WISTA UK president Monica Kohli OBE. More than this, a hearty salute, to ALL women in this industry!
AllAboutShipping is playing its part by promoting its Top 100 Women in Shipping feature. And I must add my eternal gratitude on a personal level, to having been raised in a shipping family on both my mother’s and father’s side. I must say that I have been very lucky and I owe my success in the industry to a degree of, let us say, 70% to the women around me in Shipping!!!
