Singapore, MarchĀ 27, 2025:Ā Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV), a global leader in Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC), is proud to announce progression of a groundbreaking milestone in maritime transport innovation with the first-ever Bureau Veritas classification of a Wing-in-Ground (WIG) effect craft. BV issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for the Type A WIG craft for the AirFish developed by ST Engineering AirX (AirX), a joint venture between ST Engineering and Peluca, in September 2024. Since then, AirX has commenced the execution of the approved qualification plan based on the requirement set forth in the AiP and started fabrication of the AirFish toĀ commence registration of AirFish in the respective jurisdictions during the latter part of the year, for commercial operations.

The AirFish is a cutting-edge WIG craft that is designed to operate just above the water’s surface, combining the most advanced elements of maritime and aviation engineering to redefine what’s possible in high-speed coastal and regional transport. It utilizes aerodynamic ground effect to achieve speeds of up to 100 knots (185 km/h) while gliding just above the water’s surface, offering a highly efficient and stable mode of transport. With seating for up to ten personnel including crew, or capacity for 1,000kg of cargo, the AirFish is an ideal solution for commercial operators, government agencies, and tourism providers seeking to bridge the gap between traditional sea and air transport.Crafted with versatility in mind, the AirFish’s unique design allows it to take off and land on water with minimal infrastructure. This capability provides a flexible solution for regions where ports or runways are limited, creating the possibility of connecting remote coastal communities, serving as a reliable alternative to conventional ferries, and facilitating specialized maritime applications including fast response in an emergency situation or transportation to offshore platforms.

As a leading classification society, BV provided independent expertise with regards to the design review of the AirFish WIG craft from a regulatory and classification perspective, as well as technology qualification assessments based on BV’s NI525, whilst also providing detailed risk and safety assessments. Throughout this process, the teams completed multiple workshops over 6 months to defineĀ the roadmap for classification of the AirFish. This joint effort underscores both organizations’ commitment to advancing industry standards and delivering high-performance solutions that redefine what is possible in maritime transport.
Jeffrey Lam, President Commercial Aerospace at ST Engineering, said:Ā “The classification of theĀ AirFishĀ is a milestone event for both ST EngineeringĀ AirXĀ and Bureau Veritas. Our collaboration not only validates the engineering excellence behind theĀ AirFishĀ but also sets a precedence for future WIG craft toĀ enter the global market with confidence and regulatory support. We are thrilled to offer the world a paradigm-shifting product that will redefine maritime travel for generations to come.”

Matthieu de Tugny, President of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, said:Ā “We are excited to partner with ST Engineering AirX on this groundbreaking project. The certification of the AirFish marks our first WIG classification and reflects our commitment to innovation and safety in the maritime industry
