To mark International Women’s Day 2026, WISTA UK and Stephenson Harwood LLP hosted an inspiring panel discussion titled “Re-Give to Gain: Progress in Maritime.” The event brought together professionals from across the maritime sector to reflect on leadership, mentorship, and the importance of creating opportunities for future generations.
The evening began with a warm welcome from Monica Kohli, President of WISTA UK, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Kirsty MacHardy, Partner at Stephenson Harwood LLP. The panel featured voices from across the industry:
- Katharina Stanzel – Former Managing Director at INTERTANKO
- Dan McKenzie – Head of Maritime Resilience and Skills at Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom
- Lisa-Ann Clarke – Head of Legal and Insurance at Zodiac Maritime
- Melina Veisllari – Assistant Claims Executive at Zodiac Maritime
Together, the speakers shared perspectives on inclusion, mentorship, and the evolving future of the maritime sector.

When asked, “If you could go back and speak to your younger self, what would you tell them to expect?”, the responses reflected both honesty and encouragement. Among the key reflections shared during the discussion were:
- You can have it all — just not all at the same time.
- If you have something you want to achieve, hard work can get you there.
- Things may not always go to plan, but having the courage to take opportunities is essential.
Speaking as a young professional in shipping, Melina Veisllari (Assistant Claims Executive at Zodiac Maritime) offered advice to women considering a career in the maritime industry:
“If you have a dream, protect it, nurture it, and work hard to achieve it. Always aim high. Don’t listen to people who tell you that you can’t do it. It may seem impossible at first, but it always seems impossible until it’s done. And as you succeed, bring others with you.”

The event also included contributions from Dave Whyte, who highlighted initiatives from the UK Department for Transport aimed at strengthening maritime resilience and skills development. Dora Mace-Kokota and Rebecca Crookenden also welcomed attendees with a joint introduction from Stephenson Harwood.

A highlight of the evening was the announcement of a new partnership between WISTA UK and Maritime Solent, with WISTA UK joining as a strategic affiliate to support the Solent as a leading maritime region. Stuart Baker, Chief Executive at Maritime Solent and Lorna Wagner, Programme Manager at Maritime Solent shared insights into the organisation’s work in developing a dynamic maritime cluster.

The evening concluded with a strong message that progress in maritime is built not only on professional achievement, but also on kindness, empathy, and bringing others along the journey. Through mentorship, collaboration, and support, the maritime community continues to create a more inclusive and resilient industry for the future.
