What is Happening on the 10th September?
On 14th January 2007, Oscar’s parents were told he would not survive the day. At that point, he had endured two forms of leukaemia, two bone marrow transplants, over 100 blood transfusions, five brain haemorrhages, spleen removal and five years of chemotherapy.
On 10th September 2026 my colleagues and I are racing in the OSCAR dragon boat race to raise funds to save the lives of other children like Oscar. Please consider sponsoring us. Our just giving page is here.
Despite the grim prognosis in 2007, Oscar’s medical team persevered. They got him through the immediate crisis and then were able to conquer his transplant rejection disease with a new form of stem cell transplant. He was the first child in the UK to receive this treatment. Oscar survived thanks to experimental treatment and the tenacity and commitment of the best people in the medical world …funded by donations and support from people like you and us.
Many more children are alive – all over the world – thanks to the development of the treatment used on Oscar by the bone marrow transplant specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and the UCL Institute of Child Health.
The shipping industry raises funds through the OSCAR Campaign to support their research, the new treatments they develop and, at the moment, the construction of a new Children’s Cancer Centre.
