Container crane breakdown update: 2 November 2014
Following the breakdown of the container crane at the Port of Darwin,
initial indications are that it could take at least three months to have
the crane back in operation.
The port has accepted an offer from Qube Ports to redirect a new crane,
currently in Europe and originally destined for WA, to Darwin. It is due to
arrive at the port towards the end of January 2014.
Meanwhile, discussions with other possible providers are continuing with a
view to securing a crane into the port at the earliest opportunity. Patrick
Stevedores have identified a unit that would be suitable and are in
discussions with suitable shipping companies regarding the timing of its
possible deployment to Darwin.
Loading and discharge operations are continuing utilising ships equipment
however, as this is not as efficient as the shore crane, delays are being
experienced. The crane break down coincided with extremely large shipping
demand and every effort will continue to be made to minimise delays.

Towage tariff to increase
Bowen Towage Services have advised that a tariff increase of 9.4% will come
into effect at Abbot Point from 1 January 2014.
This is in addition to the previously advised increase of the 0-25%
(depending on number of tug jobs per month) in the Volume Based Surcharge
(VBS) coming into effect from 1 December 2013.
