North American World Maritime Day Focuses on Environment
Mexico Delivers Vision for Future of Ports and Ships
October 23, 2018 – The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), the International Maritime Association (IMO), the Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP) and the API Quintana Roo announced today this year’s North American World Maritime Day will be held in Cozumel, Mexico November 13-14th. With the year’s theme of “Our Heritage- Better Shipping for a Better Future”, the event is focusing on how shipping and ports collaborate to reduce their impact on the marine environment. A highlight of the event will be the luncheon keynote delivered by Guillermo Ruiz de Teresa, General Coordinator of Ports and Merchant Marine, Mexico who will share his vision for ports and ships of the future.
“During these disruptive times, we expect great interest in the many changes occurring in the industry, especially in this region,” stated Alejandro Trillo of TGM and NAMEPA Board Member. “We need to thoroughly understand the shifting dynamics in order to work collaboratively in building a better future.”
The event will be opened with a video commendation address provided by Secretary General Kitack Lim of the IMO. Other topics include MARPOL compliance, tools for compliance, navigating change, and a port leadership roundtable featuring representatives from Mexican, US and Caribbean ports.
Reflecting its importance in developing best practices for shipping and ports, the API Quintana Roo is a primary sponsor of the event. Other supporters include Wartsila, RightShip (Carbon Offset Sponsor), TGM, and the Mexican Pilots Association.
