It has been a busy week in the clean shipping space. The UN summit early on in the week created a stir as all eyes focused on a teenage girl and the world’s leaders she rebuked. Could it be that industry led action might be able to achieve more than national policies led by a lacklustre political will? We shall see, but the announcement of a wide-ranging (in terms of signatories) coalition targeting the creation of a zero emissions deep sea vessel by 2030 is certainly eye-catching. The pathway this coalition has set is certainly challenging.

Also in Europe a report from an environmental lobby group drew our attention to two pieces of EU regulations currently under review. the latest reforms to the regions emissions trading scheme and the simultaneous work to amend the European energy taxation directive. Both could have shipping in its sights especially as the EC president-elect has clearly stated she wants shipping in the ETS.

And one initial take-away from my recent trip to Dubai- a call for more transparency in LNG bunkering, with a claim that more transparency over pricing will convince more shipowners to make the investment in the fuel.
