Business Assurance experts appointed sole auditors of the DMA’s data security management standard –
Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) has been selected by the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) to act as the sole auditor of its DataSeal standard, which promotes and enhances data security in the marketing industry.
DataSeal is available to DMA members and related participating trade associations such as the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, Institute of Promotional Marketing and the ISBA, and it is appropriate for data-owners, users or suppliers.
“All industry research points to the fact that consumers will only share their data with brands they trust to keep it secure, “ said Richard Evans, the DMA’s Compliance & Legal Services Manager. “We developed DataSeal to provide direct marketers with a clear statement that they meet the highest standards of security in collecting, keeping and using consumer data. Becoming DataSeal certified should be a priority for any company that relies on data for their marketing.”
“We chose LRQA because their services are the perfect fit for ensuring that DataSeal remains a respected standard for those companies that are committed to data security, ” Evans said.
Companies wanting to meet the requirements of DataSeal will need to demonstrate they have carried out a full risk assessment and have addressed and implemented all aspects of the DataSeal standard’s requirements.
This will mean proving, or putting in place, the appropriate controls, practices and processes to protect the security and integrity of all data.
As system security experts who already provide accredited certification to the internationally recognised information security management system standard ISO 27001, LRQA was an obvious choice to audit DataSeal, according to LRQA’s Project Manager David Kneller.
“The DMA were impressed with our ability to provide a quality, effective service. They felt that our approach and brand would give fresh impetus and increase the take-up of DataSeal within the marketing and advertising sectors, ” Kneller said.
“With information security a key issue in today’s marketplace, certification to DataSeal will help to give organisations the assurance that their suppliers have appropriate controls in place to manage their information assets, “ Kneller said. “Likewise, clients will have the assurance that the companies they trade with have opened up their systems to independent scrutiny against the rigorous requirements of the DataSeal standard.”
With information security becoming a critical issue for industry’s most senior executives, including board members, organisations are increasingly compelled to take greater care in the controls they set for access to, and the use of, the data for which they are responsible.
