Sailing team prepare for battle in Act two of the adrenaline-fueled international Series
April 16 2012 The GAC Pindar sailing team is making its final preparations for Act 2 of the Extreme Sailing Series at the 2008 Olympic venue – Qingdao, China.
The British crew will go head to head with eight other teams from 17 – 20 April to compete for the Doublestar Cup, organised in association with the Qingdao Yachting Association. The Extreme Sailing Series season kicked off earlier this year in Muscat, Oman, which saw GAC Pindar skipper and three times ISAF World Match Racing Tour Champion, Ian Williams and his crew lay down strong foundations for their 2012 campaign. GAC Pindar came 5th overall at the end of the event and although disappointed with their result, they achieved a multitude of wins and top three positions – evidence that their extensive training and boat preparation had not been in vain. Last year, the conditions in Qingdao pushed GAC Pindar and the rest of the Extreme fleet to their limits with the most capsizes ever witnessed in one day at an Extreme Sailing Series event. The GAC Pindar EX40 was one of the unlucky teams to capsize but the boat was successfully righted without breaking the mast or inflicting any serious structural damage. Williams says: “Qingdao threw everything at us last year and consequently was a huge learning experience for the whole team. This year we will be much better prepared for whatever comes our way.” Andrew Pindar, Team Principal of GAC Pindar adds: “It’s great for us to be back in China for the second event of the 2012 Extreme Sailing Series season. Last year’s racing saw plenty of action with thrills, spills and great racing in this iconic city and amazing country. China is an important market for GAC Pindar in our specialist market of marine leisure and sport logistics but moreover for our colleagues in GAC China who already have over 12 offices here. We are looking forward to another great race series and to building on the commercial relationships we started last year.” Teams competing alongside GAC Pindar in Qingdao include current series leaders Oman Sail, wildcard entry and challenger for the America’s Cup – China Team, Red Bull Extreme Sailing and Groupe Edmond de Rothschild.
