New York:  At its annual meeting this week in New York, the Maritime Association of the Port of New York/New Jersey elected Joe Hughes, chairman and ceo of the managers of the American P&I Club, as its new president.

Founded in 1873, the Maritime Association maintains the United States’ premier marine exchange, connecting all members of the New York and New Jersey port community in support of their various, and mutually dependent, activities and interests.

Seeking to promote the port as one of the world’s leading centres of trade, the association’s mission embraces the provision of marine intelligence, security issues, harbour operations, liaison with city, state and federal government, and advocacy in general on behalf of all stakeholders in the port and its affairs.

A highlight of the association’s year is its International Maritime Hall of Fame Awards, scheduled to take place in New York on May 9. This year’s honorees are Matthew K. Rose, chairman and ceo of BNSF Railway Company, Captain Wei Jiafu, chairman of COSCO Group, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, chairman of Dubai World, Joseph C. Curto, president of the New York Shipping Association, Inc., and Spyros M. Polemis, chairman & managing director of Seacrest Shipping, Co., Ltd., who is also chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping and president of the International Shipping Federation.

A 2011 inductee into the Hall of Fame, and a well-known figure in the P&I world, Mr. Hughes is believed to be the first president of the association (at least within recent memory) recruited from the insurance industry.
