Will Tiller, Team GAC Pindar ESS Skipper, wins for New Zealand
Hong Kong – 15 May 2013 – Team GAC Pindar skippers Will Tiller and Ian Williams have placed first and third in this weekend’s 1010 4G Match Racing International Regatta in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour.
The 1010 4G Match Racing International Regatta, organised by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, is a highly prestigious event on the international match racing calendar. A world-class field gathered for this year’s event, including Ian Williams, four-time World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) world champion and Team GAC Pindar WMRT skipper, and Will Tiller, skipper of Team GAC Pindar in the Extreme Sailing Series.
The match racing competition unfolded over three days and 76 races, before reaching a thrilling climax on Sunday with both Team GAC Pindar men in the mix. Ian and Will progressed from the round robin, before going head-to-head in the first semifinal, with Will prevailing in a hard-fought match 2-1. Will then went on to clinch overall victory in the grand final with a win over fellow Kiwi Phil Robinson, whilst Ian secured third place with a win in the petit final.
GAC Pindar Team Principal Andrew Pindar congratulated Will and Ian on their results: “This was a great result for our two skippers, with Will and Ian both being in great form right now, although it was an unusual experience to watch them competing against each other! The day proved to be one for the apprentice Will Tiller, sailing with his regular crew who overcame the four-time World Champion Ian Williams in a hotly contested semifinal. This result bodes really well for the remainder of the Extreme Sailing Series, with Will at the helm of Team GAC Pindar.
“Ian also put in a tremendous showing to secure third spot, particularly given that he was not competing with his regular crew. It whets the appetite for the start of this year’s World Match Racing Tour, which gets underway this week in Germany, with Ian skippering Team GAC Pindar and gunning for a record fifth World title.”
The eight-leg 2013 World Match Racing Tour begins on 15 May 2013 at Langenargen in Germany, whilst Act 4 of the Extreme Sailing Series will take place in Istanbul in June.
