The Maritime Authority of the Republic of Cyprus has recognized HELMEPA’s “Marine Environmental Awareness” seminar, which the Association has been offering merchant marine officers and staff of member-companies since the beginning of 2012.
The two-day seminar was devised by HELMEPA’s Maritime Training Centre and certified by Germanischer Lloyd according to the requirements of the STCW International Convention and the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Model Course, part of the mandatory Basic Training since 1st July 2013.
The seminar includes both presentations and workshops. The lecture topics cover discharges of oil, chemicals, sewage and waste into the sea, greenhouse gas emissions, atmospheric pollution, invasive marine species, environmental impacts of the operation of vessels, the importance of the oceans, the Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSAs), the Mediterranean marine environment and the contribution of shipping to the global economy. The workshops help towards the understanding of the rationale behind the maritime legislation adopted for the prevention of marine pollution.
HELMEPA will present its “MarineEnvironmentalAwareness” seminar on a further three occasions by the end of 2013 on the following dates:
- 17-18 September
- 22-23 October
- 26-27 November
