CACOS VGreen sailing and cutting-edge technology at the Monaco Yacht Show 2013: the RINA Group sustainability awards.

The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation chooses the RINA Group as partner for the promotion of environmental sustainability in the yachting industry through the synergy between Wood Forever Pack and Green Plus.

Innovation, environment and energy efficiency are the key words to describe the 2013 Monaco Yacht Show, which again this year is distinguished by particular attention to environmental sustainability. At the event RINA will be recognizing a number of yachts which have met high environmental standards.

RINA has awarded the additional Hybrid Propulsion class notation to the motor yacht Columbus Sport Hybrid built by Palumbo Shipyards. The 40-metre vessel is equipped with hybrid propulsion. The new additional class notation seeks to regulate the installation and control of the combined thermal and electric propulsion, a system capable of increasing both the environmental and energy performance of the vessel.

RINA also awarded the yachts that obtained the additional Green Plus class notation during the year. Green Plus is an internationally recognized symbol of commitment to environmental protection through low impact construction and power solutions. At the Monaco Yacht Show six vessels have been worthy of the Green Plus award: the 72-metre Stella Maris by VSY, the 55-metre Ocean Paradise by Benetti, the 49-metre Param Jamuna IV by Rossinavi, the 46-metre Ancallia refitted by Nomikos, the 40-metre Columbus Sport Hybrid 40 M by Palumbo Shipyards and the 40-metre Cacos V by Tecnomar.

In addition this year two yachts,  Stella Maris by VSY and Columbus Sport Hybrid by Palumbo Shipyards, have been awarded the Green Plus Platinum notation. This is the highest environmental notation, which this year has been extended with a new criterion which involves the shipyard where the yacht is built. It concerns the “Wood Forever Pact” promoted by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, active in the field of sustainable development and environmental protection. The member shipyard commits itself to an acquisition policy that is accountable for timber for the construction of yachts through a policy of material traceability, thus contributing to the struggle against deforestation and the defence of indigenous communities.

Through a collaboration agreement between the Foundation and RINA, yachts built by a shipyard that is a member of the Wood Forever Pact will be assigned an additional score towards achieving the Green Plus.

In addition to RINA Green Plus, Cacos V can boast another record, having obtained the highest score ever reached in the evaluation scale of the COMF-Noise notation, concerning the minimization of noise perceived on board at the different navigation speeds.

For sailing yachts the development of RINA regulations for the certification of the mast and rig in line with the requirements of the MCA LY3 code has been completed. The results of the software used for the direct calculation of the sailing system have been validated by a unique at sea data collection campaign. On two yachts of the Southern Wind shipyard, Windfall and Hevea, sensors were installed which recorded the accelerations during 7, 000 mile voyage from Cape Town to Genoa, supplying results which are highly significant and valuable for mast design.
