Ship owners appreciate the importance of vessel safety and environmental protection even if they do not always agree with exactly what’s laid down. What really upsets them is having to understand and deal with more than one set of rules – and rules which may conflict with each other.

Clay Maitland has plenty of everyday experience of the frustrations of owners and charterers. Christine Berg has an eye on individual shipping incidents in Europe and their safety and environmental consequences whereby the EU feels strongly about insisting on its own high standards.
