The Thames Tideway Tunnel London’s super sewer will be the UK’s biggest engineering project and will upgrade London’s antiquated sewerage system to cope with the demands of the city into the next century. The project will create thousands of jobs and hundreds of apprenticeships, and is searching for the next generation of maritime workers to support the construction and to build their maritime careers to 2023 and beyond.

Jobs in Maritime.com The chosen partner of the Thames Tideway Tunnel project is inviting anyone interested in a career on the river or seaways to attend a series of local events. They will learn more about the project, meet some of the people involved, find out about job roles and career progression, and can register their interest in job opportunities when construction starts in 2016.
The next Thames Tideway Connected Event will be held at the London Cruise Terminal, Tilbury on Thursday 26 March. More events will follow in London and Essex during April and May.
These events will explain the career opportunities that the Thames Tideway Tunnel project will offer and encourage a new generation of people to start a sustainable seagoing or shore-side career. The events will support local businesses operating in the maritime sector, providing opportunities to network and engage with those who promote UK maritime industries.
These events are open to anyone interested in a career in maritime, and will appeal to existing marine workers looking for a new challenge, ex-Armed Forces personnel and those about to leave the Forces, local unemployed people, and school leavers seeking apprenticeships.
Sewage discharge outlet at Putney Bridge
Each event will provide a Pop Up lounge, free refreshments and an exhibition area, and offer a casual environment, where people can relax and access information.

Nearly 450 people attended the first Connected event in Chatham on 24 February, with 323 registering their interest to work for the tunnel project. Many more who could not attend visited www.jobsinmaritime.com to register their interest in a career in the maritime sector.
“The Chatham event was a huge success. For many people considering a job in the maritime sector for the first time it was a real eye-opener to discover more about the variety of career opportunities that exist both seagoing and shore-side, ” adds Peter.
Sewage discharge outlet at Vauxhall Bridge
Enabling works begin on the Thames Tideway Tunnel in 2015 and construction begins in 2016 at more than 11 sites along the river. Over the eight-year construction period, the project will create thousands of jobs. Beyond 2023, the project will create a lasting legacy that is about more than just a cleaner river. It will ensure the continuity of employment and skills development within the UK maritime sector, helping individuals to develop long term careers within the industry.
Lewis Brown, Operations Director for Thames Tideway Tunnel, is a 29 year-old former river apprentice who has achieved exceptional success and rapid progression in his maritime career and now jointly owns and manages his own shipping company, Thames Shipping Ltd.
He said: “The opportunities on this river, London’s ‘Liquid Highway, ’ are endless. Londoners live with this thriving, exciting, commercial river right on their doorstep yet many have never considered the job opportunities it provides. I’d encourage anyone who has ever thought about a career in maritime to come along to one of these events and find out more. The River Thames has given me a fantastic career path and I know it can offer people great prospects and endless horizons.”

· The River Thames and the Channel is the largest maritime ‘cluster’ in the UK, representing more than 4000 businesses, employing 210, 000 people and generating £5bn of GDP. Maritime industries on the River Thames contribute £3.7bn pa to the UK economy and employ 46, 375 people.
· The Thames Tideway Tunnel is a major new sewer, urgently needed to protect the tidal River Thames from increasing pollution. London’s sewerage system is no longer fit for purpose and spills millions of tonnes of sewage into the tidal section of the river every year.
