NEW YORK— The 42nd Conference of the Comite Maritime International (CMI), hosted by The Maritime Law Association of the United States (“MLA”), will be taking place in New York City between May 3-6th at the New York Hilton.  This is the first time since 1965 that the CMI has held it’s a conference in New York, and the first time they will be combining CMI business with the annual MLA Spring Meeting.  There will be two days of joint sessions of the organizations, bringing local and international experts together to contribute to the debate, with amendments to the York Antwerp Rules on General Average requiring consensus and a proposed new set of Guidelines for the use of the Rules being presented.

“This is not only an historic meeting, but a critically important one for the entire shipping community, ” stated Robert Clyne, President of the MLA.  “We plan to approve the Rules of General Average so that there will be a New York Antwerp Rules 2016.  We also plan to spend time exploring the many facets of New York- one of the world’s leading maritime centers.”

A highlight of the conference is a keynote address by the new IMO Secretary-General, Mr. Kitack Lim who assumed the role in January.  Many of the discussions and determinations of the Conference directly address IMO activity and work done with its Legal Committee.

Another featured aspect of the Conference is a presentation by Captain Nick Sloane, the Salvage Master of the Costa Concordia salvage and wreck removal operation.  Other topics include Polar Shipping and Arctic Development; Cybercrime in Shipping; Offshore Liability issues; Unmanned Craft; Liability for Wrongful Arrest and shipping law issues arising from Refugee Migration at Sea.

To date, the event has received the support of 36 companies as sponsors, with the American Bureau of Shipping, Clyde & Co, and Squire Patton Boggs taking the lead as Platinum Sponsors.  Sponsorships ranging from $15, 000 to $1, 500 are still available by contacting Gail Nicholas g.nicholas@morganmarketcomm.com.
