John Faraclas
The BDI (Baltic Dry Index) lost another four points since yesterday and at 798 points could be another Market Mayday; Geopolitics still certainly uncertain. John Faraclas daily briefing:
The Capers “reduced” their losses at only 27 points and the BCI 2014 now stands at 1,248 points.
The Panamaxes following the end (?) of their upwards rally, lost four points and now read 921 – some analysts and journalist were anxious to report the rise, so they have put a curse on the market’s most promising size…
The Supras though, not surprisingly, continue to rise, and now the BSI reads 719 – up five points..
The Handies’ BHSI managed to “escape” too and gained two points; now standing at 432.
Not the same more or less scenarios for the Wets; the last published BDTI (Dirties) and BCTI (Cleands) lost nine and four points respectively – 658 and 430… tough
The price of WTI remains below the US$ 50 mark; time to reflect on this crucial issue as the energy jargon can route, for sure, the increase danger of the Third World War. We adhere to this view which in combination with messy Geopolitics, can produce cataclysmic changes…
The Containerships’ trade needs asap, one way or another, an appropriate CONSOLIDATION; end of the story. Tramp, or Liner trades are severely damaged…
LNG carriers have a future, no doubt but equally the LPG ones; the energy though jargon as expressed above, can overrule the day and trades…
The Demolition issue must come even more closer to the spot-eye. Double issues arise: Get more tonnage demolished to ease the market and secondly, ensure same is done in a humane and environmentally appropriate fashion… We can give you all involved appropriate replies, properly documented since 1983 to the detriment of many in the industry!
The Geopolitical front continues to be marred from:
The MIGRANTS issue, the Syrian saga, the Turkish insistence in having a say in the entire make-up of the region, the super powers antagonism against the real public’s interest.
BREXIT is the talk on Planet ocean and soon with GREXIT and the Greek saga will make the world spin around…
The US elections will continue to be messy; in less than 13 days the full result will be know,
The cyber attack last week, was the biggest so far of its kind, affecting us too… Shame to the guardians – if they exist, of cyber security and freedom.

A moment of recognition: Dr. Aleka Mandaraka-Sheppard holding the special flower bouquet
We are receiving positive messages from last night’s London Shipping Law Centre 14th Cadwalleder’s debate; excellent – as mentioned, we will soon have a full write up and more than pleased to say that the debate attracted delegates from all over Planet Ocean covering all shipping’s stakeholders!. A great success for Dr. Aleka-Mandaraka – Sheppard and her team. An excellent opportunity to listen to the international experts and a very timely event/issue which bothers us all! As Lord Clarke said: “The Master should be fully supported by everyone”.-
Tonight, all eyes and ears are focused on “Dealing with certain uncertainty in shipping”, Prof. Helen A. Thanopoulou’s lecture at Cass Business School. Will revert on this.
Don’t forget tomorrow’s HESGB event at the Hellenic Centre were Katerina Nomikou, a partner at Gunner Cooke will speak on Greek Property Tax – a very special legal seminar at 18:15 hrs!
All in all, this is the best ever market for the shipping industry, as those thoughtful one with availability/access in funds to acquire cheap 5-year old and newbuilding tonnage. It is a bad market, but some thrive in chaos, and why not; this is the good message of those who have done a proper asymmetrical based risk assessment!
Have a nice evening and be on guard; things are getting nasty!
